A disconnector is special attachment of an arrester which connected in series with an arrester. There are thermal explosive disconnectors and thermal melted ones.
Working principle of thermal explosive disconnectors is that fault current of power frequency increased continually when the arresters is damaged, electric arcs and heat will be generated in internal disconnectors which will ignite particular explosives and make arresters out of operation. The thermal melted disconnector makes use of continually increased fault current of power frequency which is generated when the arrester is damaged, a lot of heat will be generated by the resistance card which can make the disconnector take reliable action before thermal break down of the arrester so that the arrester can be out of operation. After rapid action, the disconnector will have remarkable separation mark, so that the line fault can be found easily and the arrester can meet service requirement of exempting from maintenance, so as to raise stability and security of electric power system in operation.
A discharge counter or an online monitor can be attached to metal oxide arresters with a disconnector, which can monitor changes of current leaked by arrestors and record times of movement. When the disconnector moved, the discharge recorder or online monitor will be out of operation with arrestor.
